We’ve sent Dollar Flight Club members all over the world with our cheap international flight alerts, saving them an estimated $10 million USD on airfare combined. Understanding how to use Google Flights, Momondo, and Skiplagged is extremely important.
Along that journey, we’ve compiled data and thousands of hours of experience finding cheap flights.
If you’re a Dollar Flight Club member, you know that most of the flight alerts we send out prompt you to use Google Flights, then Momondo, and occasionally Skiplagged to check you have the best fare. In our experience, these bring back the cheapest prices, and are our favorites.
Here’s a quick guide: how to use Google Flights, Momondo, and Skiplagged
- Google Flights – Google Flights is the best for searching overall availability from a variety of cities at the same time. It allows you to easily browse the calendar view to find the cheapest dates fast.
Once you get to Google Flights, enter your departure airport and desired destination, and then hit “Search” – We entered San Francisco (departure airport) and Barcelona (destination).
To find the cheapest fares, add in any other departure airports that are close to you. For example, we entered Oakland and San Jose as they are not far from San Francisco. To do so, click on the “departure airport” which, in the case, is San Francisco, and add in other airports close by. Then, click the blue check box to finish.
Next, pull up the handy calendar tool by clicking “departure date” which, in this case, is Fri, Oct 5. Locate the lowest fares in green and select the dates that you want. Then, click “done.
Tip: Make sure you browse the calendar view up to 9 months ahead so you know the cheapest time frame to travel.
You’ll notice a variety of options in terms of airlines. Note that the cheapest fare for this route is $314 round trip from Oakland (OAK) to Barcelona (BCN). Click on the route you want.
Finally, select the flight. If you’re satisfied with the price, book through the airline (in this case, Iberia or other partners like American Airlines). Once you click “select” you will be redirected to book.
To double and triple check that the price isn’t cheaper elsewhere, move to the Momondo and Skiplagged.
- Momondo – Momondo is outstanding for finding the absolute cheapest fares that you won’t see elsewhere. By double checking the price here, you’ll find cheaper fares than Google Flights 90% of the time, sometimes by a few hundred dollars.
Head over to Momondo, re-enter the itinerary that you found in Google Flights, and hit search.
Make sure you wait until the page fully loads and the search is complete. Browse the fares listed for prices lower than you found on Google Flights. To book a fare you found on Momondo, select “Go to site”. As you see, the lowest fare here is $352 roundtrip.
You’ll get redirected to the cheapest Online Travel Agency (OTA) to book. In this case, the best fare is with LEVEL.
Last thing to do is book the flight!
- Skiplagged – Skiplagged is so good they actually got sued by United Airlines a few years ago for saving people too much money on airfare by finding a loophole in the booking system. However, they won the lawsuit and are up and running better than ever.
Lastly, to triple check that you have the absolute best fare, head to Skiplagged and enter in those dates you found using Google Flights. Click “search flights.”
Move your cursor over the cheapest fare and click “select,” if the fare is cheaper than what you found with Google Flights. Continue and book.
