Best Boardgames to Play While Social Distancing

In the age of social distancing, most of us are stuck at home—day after day after day.

Unfortunately, it’s hard to say when the adventurer in your life is going to be able to go on their next trek around the world. But you might be able to spice things up a bit with some old-fashioned entertainment: games.

We’re not talking about the classics like Monopoly, Risk, or Scrabble, either. We’re thinking about some of the newer games on the market that tap into your pal’s sense of adventure in a number of different ways.

We’ve teamed up with our friends at Underdog Games to bring you a list of seven games you should think about playing with the adventurer in your life.

1. Trekking the World

Our friends at Underdog Games recently closed a successful Kickstarter campaign to release their second game, Trekking the World, which will be a must-have for travelers.

From Angel Falls in Venezuela to Ha Long Bay in Vietnam, you and a team of payers will jaunt all around the globe in a quest to collect souvenirs and become the world’s most seasoned traveler.

Since you might not be hopping on a plane anytime soon, this here is the best way to “see the world” while self-isolating.

2. Trekking the National Parks

Trekking the National Parks is an award-winning family board game that the adventurer in your life will absolutely love! Made by our friends at Underdog Games, the game brings up to six players on a tour across America’s National Parks in an exciting and competitive way.

Make your way through parks across the country, from The Everglades to Acadia and Joshua Tree to Olympia—and everywhere in between!

The biggest perk is that it’s the easiest way to “see the national parks” while being stuck at home.

3. Joking Hazard

From the makers of Cyanide & Happiness comes Joking Hazard, an adult-themed card game you’ll have to play for yourself to truly experience. Each card represents a panel in a comic strip, and players take turns offering suggestions on how to complete a two-panel sequence. The dealer then picks the card he or she thinks best completes the series.

The game is advertised as “an extremely not-for-kids party game,” so it’s safe to say that at least some of the three-card panels that are created will be very offensive

But laughs will be had. Take our word for it.

4. Exploding Kittens

Made by the team behind The Oatmeal, Exploding Kittens is a card game for players 7-years-old and up “who are into kittens and explosions and laser beams and sometimes goats.” To date, more than 9 million copies of this game have been sold.

You can wrap up each game in about 15 minutes, and there are also a number of expansion decks available if you want to unlock more fun from the game.

5. What Do You Meme?

Who’s going to be crowned meme king or meme queen?

That’s what you and your adventurer pals are going to find out when you play What Do You Meme?

This card game brings some of our favorite memes to real life, prompting players to drop a meme that they think best illustrates a particular phrase, like When you’re cutting wrapping paper and the scissors start to glide or When you’re trick-or-treating and someone gives you a box of raisins. May the funniest meme win!

6. Cards Against Humanity

Cards Against Humanity is a “party game for horrible people.”

If you’ve ever played the game before, you definitely know what that means. If you haven’t, you’re in for a bit of a treat—hopefully one you’ll enjoy.

This fill-in-the-blank card game is raunchy, offensive, hilarious, and sexual—all at once. You might not want to play the game with your parents or your priest. But when you’re hanging out with the adventurers in your life and sharing some drinks, you may very well laugh until you cry.

7. Pick Your Poison

The what would you rather do party game, Pick Your Poison reveals who’s the most adventurous in your group (or the grossest!).

Select two scenarios and put them face-up on the table. Players then anonymously pick the card they’d rather do—whether that eats six ounces of scabs or use hot sauce as eye drops. The game has an NSFW expansion pack, and also a family variety if you’d like to keep things closer to G-rated.

So there you have it.

The adventurer in your life can’t always hop on a plane and fly around the world (especially these days!).

But they can travel to other places, so to speak, by playing any of these seven games. Next time you need to buy this person a present, you can’t go wrong with anything on this list.

Here’s to channeling your inner child and having fun playing games indoors!
